And under it the Latin inscription. The Matthew was sailed by John Cabot. A 42 day voyage he reached North America when he landed on Cape Breton Island on June 24 1497. Pounds for his discovery by Henry VII. Below the waves is inscribed the Latin phrase FLOREAT TERRA NOVA (May the new found land flourish).
