It was on May 23, 1873, that Parliament passed an act establishing the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), and this is considered to be the birthdate of the RCMP. Few things say "Canada" like the Red Serge and the wide-brimmed hat of an RCMP officer. Easily recognizable the world over, the RCMP has a long and storied history that has been woven into the fabric of our country. I've always loved the vintage posters, comics and imagery of the past, which portray the strong, silent nature of the RCMP, usually shown with their trusted steed in front of a rugged and majestic background such as the Rocky Mountains. With 150 years of experience behind us, the RCMP has the chance to demonstrate to all Canadians how we have evolved and continue to modernize.
In the lead-up to and through our anniversary year, we will reflect on our past with humility, demonstrate our evolution, and showcase our integral role in keeping Canadians and our country safe. The anniversary is also an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to, and pride in, all members of the RCMP family - both our cherished veterans and our incredible employees whose passion for service continues to drive our organization forward.
