Standing front and center on the Canadian flag since 1965, it signifies pride, connection and community. The maple leaf is also the namesake of the country's signature silver bullion coin. Since its introduction in 1988, the Silver Maple Leaf has become one of the world's most iconic and instantly recognizable coins. While the Royal Canadian Mint has not yet made an official statement, it is very likely that 2023 will be the last year that the RCM strikes the late Queen Elizabeth II's effigy on the obverse of their Maple Leaf coin series.
Struck using the same groundbreaking technology the mint exhibited on their 2021 and 2022 Super Incuse Maples, this 2023 issue has been crafted with a selective arrangement of black rhodium plating. On the reverse, a lonely, black maple leaf struck deep into the center of the coin seems to embody the feeling of mourning.
Yet on the obverse, black fields and a polished effigy presents Queen Elizabeth II as a radiant silver light shining in the darkness. These effects combine to show Walter Ott's iconic Maple Leaf design like it has never been seen before. Struck at the prestigious Royal Canadian Mint in a troy ounce of highly-pure 99.99% fine silver, the Silver Maple Leaf earns its name from the incredibly detailed maple leaf that graces its reverse. In addition to the maple leaf, the word "CANADA" arches over the image, while the coin's purity, "9999, " is inscribed on both sides of the leaf. An inscription along the bottom half of the rim reads, FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR." The coin's obverse features the regal portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II along with the "20 DOLLARS legal-tender denomination and the 2023 year date. To honor the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, her birth and death year are included to the left of her portrait. In addition, this one of a kind edition has been limited to just 8,000 pieces!
