It wasnt until 1905 that the bone was correctly identified as part of the upper jaw of a sphenacodontid , a family of pelycosaur-grade mammal-like reptiles, or synapsids. These animals lived from the Late Pennsylvanian to middle Permian ages.

Based on similarities of the jaw bones, experts now believe that the specimen could actually belong to the sail-back Dimetrodon or a similar animal, although fossil evidence of a sail has yet to be found. If Bathygnathus was similar to Dimetrodon , the large sail on its back could have helped regulate its body temperature. Despite its early misidentification, this fossil was and is of great scientific and historical significance scientists theorize that it lived between 290 and 260 million years ago, when, they believe, what is now Prince Edward Island lay near the equator. This legal tender coin is the first of a series on dinosaurs discovered in Canada.

FIRST COIN IN A NEW SERIES: coins to feature lifelike prehistoric animals and dinosaurs discovered in Canada. Each coin displays an exceptionally detailed engraving of a full, non-skeletal, lifelike portrait of the Bathygnathus borealis.

Struck in 99.99% pure silver. Limited mintage of only 7,973. Designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi, this coin displays a depiction of the Bathygnathus borealis , scientifically verified by the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. Depicted here as similar to Dimetrodon , the mammal-like reptile bares its long, sharp teeth as its powerful, low-slung body walks.

From the animal's back rises one of the key Dimetrodon features: the tall, spiny, skin-covered dorsal sail used to regulate body temperature. The reverse is engraved with the words "CANADA, " the date "2013" and the face value of 20 DOLLARS.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve. Are also available for an additional charge. Check out my other items.

Many coin dealers search all coins when they are received from the Mint. They "cherry-pick" the best coins. Then submit them to be graded, certified, and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc. When a dealer searches coins, those that they sell in original Mint packaging are only lesser quality coins.

Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed. Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered. Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces. However, tilting the coin may resulting one side being slightly out of focus.

Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint. We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting. We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits.
